PTI, New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Wednesday extended till July 31 the tenure of the Justice Geeta Mittal Committee constituted to oversee the relief and rehabilitation of victims of caste violence in Manipur.

A bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi extended the tenure of the committee after being informed that its tenure had expired in July last year.

The bench was also informed that the committee has so far submitted 42 reports to the Supreme Court on various aspects related to the rehabilitation of victims. On August 7, 2023, the Supreme Court had ordered to constitute a committee of three former women judges of the High Court to oversee the relief and rehabilitation of the victims and to provide them compensation.

Also, former Maharashtra police chief Dattatreya Padsalgikar was directed to supervise the investigation of criminal cases. The committee was empowered to submit its report directly to the Supreme Court.

Headed by former Chief Justice of Jammu and Kashmir High Court, Geeta Mittal, this committee includes former Bombay High Court judge (retired) Shalini P. Joshi and former Delhi High Court judge Asha Menon.
