Manish Kumar, Patna. The effect of the state government's scheme of providing free electricity up to 125 units is now clearly visible. Under this scheme, implemented from August 1, 2025, domestic consumers started getting relief from the electricity bill for the month of July itself.
Its major impact was revealed in the month of December, when the electricity bill of 39.33 percent domestic consumers under Patna Electricity Supply Unit (PESU) remained zero. This means that these consumers consumed less than 125 units of electricity in a month.
A total of 6,27,284 domestic consumers are registered in 13 divisions of PESU. Of these, the electricity consumption of 2,46,719 consumers for the month of December was recorded to be less than 125 units, due to which they did not have to pay any electricity bill. This figure shows that a large number of consumers are getting direct benefits of the scheme and there has been a significant reduction in the monthly expenses of the common people.
There are a total of 2,79,503 domestic consumers in the six divisions of PESU's eastern region namely Bankipur, Rajendra Nagar, Rajendra Nagar-I, Rajendra Nagar-II, Patna City and Gulzarbagh. Of these, 1,44,378 consumers consumed less than 125 units of electricity in December.
At the same time, there are a total of 3,47,781 domestic consumers in the seven divisions of the western region, Ashiana, Danapur, Dak Bungalow, Gardanibagh, Khagaul, Nutan Rajdhani and Patliputra, out of which the bills of 1,02,341 consumers remained zero.
Consumers of Kankarbagh-II division are ahead in availing the benefit of free electricity.
If we look at the division wise situation, the highest number of consumers consuming less than 125 units of electricity were recorded in Kankarbagh-II division. Here, out of total 69,010 consumers, 37,022 consumers took advantage of the free electricity scheme.
In contrast, the number of such consumers was the lowest in Dak Bungalow division, where only 5,167 consumers out of 17,960 were able to consume less than 125 units.
Highest number of consumers in Khagaul division of Pesu
Khagaul division leads in terms of total number of consumers in Pese, where there are 76,678 domestic consumers. Dak Bungalow division has the lowest number of consumers.
More consumers will come in the category of zero electricity bill in February-March
While the free electricity scheme is providing direct financial relief to the consumers, it is also proving to be a positive initiative towards judicious and responsible use of electricity. To stay within the limited consumption limit, people are now avoiding unnecessary electricity usage, which is also giving impetus to energy conservation. This scheme will yield better results in the coming months.
Considering the weather conditions, the number of consumers consuming less than 125 units of electricity is likely to increase further in February and March. During these months, the effect of both cold and heat remains relatively less, due to which the use of electrical appliances like geysers, heaters and fans is minimized. In such a situation, a large number of consumers can take advantage of the free electricity scheme and come under the category of zero electricity bill.
