Divya Gautam, Astropatri. Mahashivratri, the biggest festival of Lord Mahadev, will be celebrated this year on 15 February 2026. As unique as Lord Shiva's form is, the messages hidden behind his jewelery are equally deep. The half moon shining on the head of Mahadev enhances the beauty of his divine form. Devotees often want to know why Lord Shiva placed the moon on his forehead? Let us understand in detail the beautiful mysteries and mythology behind wearing the moon on this auspicious occasion.

Daksh Prajapati's curse and protection of the moon

According to mythology, Moon was married to 27 daughters of King Daksha, whom we know as Nakshatras. Chandrama loved one of his wives, Rohini, very much, due to which the other wives felt jealous. Seeing the plight of his daughters, King Daksh became extremely angry and cursed the moon that his light would gradually diminish and he would disappear completely. Frightened by this, the Moon took refuge in Lord Shiva. Pleased with Moon's arduous devotion, Lord Shiva gave him life and gave him a place on his head to protect his honour. For this reason the moon waxes and wanes for 15 days and waxes for 15 days.

Deep symbol of peace of mind and control

In astrology, Moon is considered the lord of the mind. Just as the phases of the moon sometimes become complete and sometimes they diminish completely, similarly the human mind is also sometimes happy and sometimes very sad in emotions. The presence of moon on Mahadev's forehead means that he has completely controlled his mind and senses. It gives us the message that even amidst the hustle and bustle of the world and mental turmoil, we should keep our mind calm and stable. Only when we get control over our thoughts, we can concentrate like Mahadev and become successful in facing the most difficult situations with great ease.

Balance of heat and coldness of poison

When Mahadev drank the terrible Halahal poison that came out of the churning of the ocean for the welfare of the world, his body temperature had increased a lot. The Moon is considered the main symbol of coolness in the entire universe. To reduce the intense heat of Mahadev's body, to cool him down and to calm the deadly effects of the poison, the Moon itself prayed to reside on his forehead. Mahadev accepted this service of Moon and wore it on his head. This shows the immense compassion of Lord Shiva and his love for the world. This form teaches us that power should be used properly only to remove the sufferings of others and spread peace.
