Leela Mishra was born in a wealthy family. His father was a landlord. He got married at the age of 12. Due to being away from education in her childhood, she had become the mother of two children by the age of 17. Leela came into films because of her husband as he was an actor and he introduced her to Mama Shinde, who was an employee of Dadasaheb Phalke's film company. Shinde suggested that Leela Mishra should get into acting herself.

For this reason, the directors used to give her the role of aunty, neighbor or maternal aunt. It is even said that when Leela Mishra reached the set for the first time, she had a pallu on her head, seeing which people even made fun of her. Leela had refused to become the lead actress because she did not want to do romantic scenes. She worked in more than 300 films in her film career and mostly played mother's roles.
