Reuters, Sokoto (Nigeria). At least 200 people were killed in militant attacks on two villages - Woro and Nuku in western Nigeria's Kwara state - on Tuesday evening. This is one of the deadliest attacks in recent months.

According to local MP Mohammed Umar Bio, the massacre was carried out by an armed group called 'Lakurawa' which is linked to the notorious terrorist organization Islamic State. According to the Red Cross, the affected areas are extremely remote and located about eight hours away from the state capital.

Relief operations are being hampered due to its proximity to the Benin border and poor connectivity. Kwara Governor Abdul Rahman Abdul Razak described it as a "cowardly act of desperation".

According to him, the attack was carried out in response to the ongoing military operations in the state. Nigeria is currently grappling with a complex security crisis. Insurgency continues in the north-eastern part, while incidents of kidnapping for ransom and armed robberies have increased sharply in the north-west and north-central regions.
