A massive fire broke out in a factory in Kolkata.
State Bureau, Kolkata. A heart-wrenching accident took place in Anandpur (Nazirabad) of the metropolis on the morning of Republic Day. A massive fire that broke out late on Sunday night in a famous Momo factory and decorator warehouse here took a huge form by Monday. Even after more than 11 hours, the fire could not be completely controlled.
So far, the death of three security personnel has been confirmed in this accident, while many employees are reported missing. However, the police and fire department have not yet given any official information regarding the number of missing. But, it is being said that six people are missing.
Night shift work was going on in the factory on Sunday night, when suddenly at around 3 am on Monday, flames started rising. The huge amount of palm oil and LPG cylinders present inside the factory added fuel to the fire, which further fueled the fire with explosions. Twelve fire tenders and hydraulic ladders are at the spot, but rescue efforts are being hampered due to narrow lanes and heavy smoke.
'The gate was closed from outside' - serious allegations of negligence
The most disturbing aspect of this tragedy is the gross safety lapse. According to the family members of missing employee Pankaj Haldar, at 3:30 in the night Pankaj had told on phone, "The main gate of the factory is locked from outside and we are trying to get out by breaking the wall." This last cry of the employees suffocating due to smoke exposes the insensitivity of the management.
The Chief Minister's Office (CMO) is keeping an eye on this entire incident. Police have started investigating the allegations of 'locking from outside'. If this is found to be true, a case of culpable homicide will be registered against the factory owners. Currently, missing people are being searched in the debris with the help of forensic team and robotic cameras.
Minister Arup Biswas has also reached the spot. On the other hand, a flat in Mallik Bazar area of Kolkata also caught fire on Monday.
