Digital Desk, Srinagar. Kashmir Valley's prominent cleric and moderate separatist leader Mirwaiz Umar Farooq removed the designation 'President All-Party Hurriyat Conference' from his verified X profile on Thursday evening.
The edited bio on Mirwaiz's He has more than two lakh followers.
Mirwaiz, whose organization Awami Action Committee has been banned by the central government under the stringent anti-terrorism law, could not be immediately reached for comment.
The All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC), formed in 1993, was a group of separatist groups in Jammu and Kashmir that had widespread influence and was capable of coordinating large-scale bandhs and political mobilization.
However, the organization's influence declined over the past decade due to various reasons, including internal strife and the central government's subsequent toughening of its stance towards separatist groups.
After the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, the Center banned most of the constituent organizations of APHC, and since then many senior leaders have been arrested/cased under stringent laws or have completely shunned public activities.
