PTI, Palakkad. A pick-up van carrying over 100 boxes of explosives has been seized near Palakkad town. A police officer said that more than 100 boxes of gelatin sticks and 20 boxes of detonators were recovered from the vehicle.

The boxes of explosives were hidden under a batch of watermelons and the incident occurred around 9 pm on Wednesday night. The driver of the vehicle has been taken into custody.

During preliminary interrogation, the driver revealed that he had loaded the boxes from Coimbatore and was taking them to a mine in Thrissur. The officer said that the driver did not stop the vehicle even after being asked by the police. After this the vehicle was chased.

Police stopped the pick-up van while checking vehicles after receiving information that a large quantity of explosives were being brought into the state illegally. A case will be registered against the driver under the Explosive Substances Act.
