State Bureau, New Delhi. The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has prepared a detailed State Action Plan to reduce the dangerous levels of pollution in the capital.

The Commission has set a target that by the end of the year 2026, the average Air Quality Index (AQI) of Delhi should be improved by 15 percent compared to the average of the last five years. Along with this, a target has been set to reduce PM 2.5 levels by 15 percent and PM 10 levels by 20 percent.

According to the data released by the Commission, the average AQI of Delhi was 209 in 2024 and 191 in 2025. Under the new plan, CAQM aims to reduce it to 177 in 2026.

Talking about fine particles PM 2.5, its annual average was 110 in 2024 and 99 micrograms per cubic meter in 2025, which efforts will be made to limit to 96 by 2026. At the same time, the target is to reduce the level of PM 10 from 225 (2024) and 209 (2025) to 177.

CAQM has clarified that the problem of pollution in Delhi is linked to many sources. Therefore, its solution requires coordinated action on transport, construction activities, waste management, industry and road dust.

Changes in transportation: Under the plan, large-scale introduction of electric buses, expansion of Metro and Namo Bharat Corridor, promotion of e-vehicle charging infrastructure will be done.

CAQM has pointed out a shortfall of 5,755 buses in the CNG or electric fleet in the transport sector, filling which is a priority. Apart from this, the target is to increase the metro network from 352 km to 549 km.

Waste Management: A target has been set to rapidly reduce the landfill sites (garbage mountains) of Okhla, Bhalswa and Ghazipur. The Commission aims to reduce the garbage burden at the Okhla landfill from 23 lakh metric tonnes to 7.2 lakh metric tonnes. Dust and Construction: Extensive use of mechanical road-sweeping machines, increased greenery on roadsides and strict rules at construction sites will be ensured to control dust. Monitoring System: The number of existing 40 stations is being increased to 46 to monitor air quality in the city.

According to the report, about 32 percent of the annual budget of Rs 81.3 crore earmarked for this action plan has been utilized so far.

Apart from this, 30,672 industries present in authorized areas are being inspected to curb industrial pollution. Survey of units in unauthorized areas is also going on.
