Digital Desk, New Delhi. The Supreme Court has refused to interfere with the Madras High Court's October 2025 judgment limiting religious practices in the Nellithoppu area atop the Tirupparankundram hills in Tamil Nadu's Madurai district.

The apex court, while upholding the High Court's decision, said that Muslims can offer namaz at the Sikandar Badshah Aulia Dargah situated on the hills only on the occasions of Ramzan and Bakrid, and not every day.

The court also upheld the ban on animal sacrifice and cooking and serving of meat inside the Dargah premises. The bench of Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice PB Varale was hearing the appeal of M. Imam Hussain of the Dargah. The bench described the High Court order as balanced and found no reason to interfere in it.

Last month, the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court had directed the authorities of the Hazrat Sikandar Badshah Aulia Dargah located on Tirupparankundram hill to organize only Santhanakudu Urs and limit the number of people attending it to 50.

During the hearing, the Tamil Nadu government had told that permission would be given only for Santhanakudu Urs to be held on January 6. The government said that similar permission was given in 2023 and the same conditions will be followed this year also.

The government had also said that permission will not be given for Kandhuri Mahotsav and sacrifice of animals, carrying of meat or non-vegetarian food and cooking of non-vegetarian food will not be allowed. The court had adjourned the case till January 20 for filing the counter affidavit.
