People wearing glasses should be alert if their eyesight deteriorates.

Durgesh Tripathi, Gorakhpur. In case of poor eyesight, people wearing spectacles should be alert by getting it checked in the shop. If the power of the glasses is increasing every few months, it can be a big alarm bell. The result of the research conducted on 111 patients in the Ophthalmology Department of AIIMS is worrying. These patients did not consult a specialist due to poor eyesight, instead they went to the shop and got glasses made by reading the letters. As vision deteriorated, the power of the glasses was increased. More than 55 such patients had glaucoma in their eyes. Of these, 37 were women. The main reason for this is not getting checked by an ophthalmologist.

Studies show that glaucoma, especially primary angle closure glaucoma, progresses without any obvious symptoms. By the time the patient reaches the hospital, the vision has been irreparably damaged. Dr. Rohit Kumar conducted this study on patients with similar symptoms who came to OPD between December 2023 and July 2025. All of them were from rural areas. This included 66.7 percent women. The conclusion was that with increasing age in women, thickening and forward shifting of the lens of the eye increases the risk of angle closure.

The average age of the victim women was 53 years. The number of patients in the age group of 40 to 60 years was highest. This shows that glaucoma is no longer just a disease of old age. Glaucoma, commonly known as glaucoma, is a condition in which increased pressure inside the eye damages the optic nerve. If left untreated, it can cause permanent blindness.

Negligence is more in rural areas

The patients selected for the study were classified into four categories primary angle closure suspect (PACS), primary angle closure (PAC), primary angle closure glaucoma (PACG) and normal. In this, more than 50 percent of the patients were found to be directly in the last and severe stage of PACG i.e. glaucoma. Experts believe that lack of regular eye check-up, lack of awareness and limited health facilities in rural areas are the main reasons for this.

There are often no symptoms in the early stages of glaucoma. After the age of 40, regular eye examination by a specialist is necessary. The reality comes out only by examining through the lens. There is a need to increase screening and awareness campaigns in rural areas. - Dr. Rohit Kumar, Researcher, AIIMS Gorakhpur
