Digital Desk, New Delhi. The discussion on the no-confidence motion against Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla is likely to take place on March 9. This information has been given by news agency ANI quoting sources.

This development came to light when opposition parties started the process of removing Om Birla from the post of Lok Sabha Speaker. Om Birla has distanced himself from the proceedings of the House following the opposition's motion alleging that the House is run in a clearly partisan manner.

Opposition accused the speaker

In its motion, the opposition also accused the Speaker of taking some unexpected action in the Lok Sabha and making false claims against Congress members and also requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi not to come to the House to reply to the debate on the motion of thanks on the President's speech.

What does Article 96 of the Constitution say?

Article 94C of the Constitution deals with the provisions for the removal of the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Article 96 of the Constitution gives the Speaker an opportunity to defend himself in the House. When a motion is presented in the House to remove the Speaker from his post, the Speaker can cast his vote but in case of a tie, he cannot cast his vote.

The Lok Sabha has been witnessing disruption since February 2, when Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was not allowed by the Speaker to read an article based on an excerpt from the book by former service chief MM Naravane, which mentioned the India-China conflict.

Due to the uproar by the opposition on 4 February, Prime Minister Modi could not respond to the debate on the motion of thanks and the motion of thanks was passed on 5 February without the Prime Minister's speech.
