AP, Madrid. After Australia, France and Denmark, now Spain and Greece are also planning to ban the use of internet media platforms like TikTok, Facebook and Instagram for children under 16 years of age.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez announced on Tuesday that the move was being taken to protect young people from the harmful effects of online content and to protect their mental and physical health.

During a summit held in the United Arab Emirates, Sanchez expressed deep concern over the presence of illegal and objectionable content such as child sexual exploitation and deepfakes on internet media platforms.

He bluntly said that governments can no longer turn a blind eye to this problem. This ban will not be only on paper. The government will force internet media companies to implement a strict 'age verification system'.

Instead of just 'checking boxes', companies need to develop real technology that can effectively keep children away from these platforms. Currently, there is an age limit of 13 years on most apps, but users often create accounts by falsifying their age.
