Padma Bhushan To Former Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari, Wave Of Happiness From Kapkot To Village

The Government of India has announced to honor former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and former Governor of Maharashtra Bhagat Singh Koshyari with the Padma Bhushan award for the year 2026. This announcement was made on the eve of Republic Day 2026. In view of his long-term contribution in public life, he will be given this prestigious civilian honour.

Bhagat Singh Koshyari will be honored with Padma Bhushan. Padma Bhushan is India's third highest civilian honour. This honor has been announced for his long experience and services in education, politics and social fields.

After the announcement of Padma Bhushan, there is an atmosphere of joy from Kapkot area to his native village Namti Chetbagad. Village resident Narayan Singh Koshyari said that the village has once again become proud after former Chief Minister and Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari received this honour. He said that Bhagatda has a deep love for his soil and he still spends time in the village. MLA Suresh Gadhiya, Minister of State for Status Bhupesh Upadhyay, Shiv Singh Bisht and other public representatives and social organizations have expressed happiness. He said that this honor is a matter of pride for the entire Uttarakhand.

Journey from Uttarakhand to national politics

Bhagat Singh Koshyari was born on 17 June 1942, in Namti Chetabagad, Bageshwar. He is a senior leader of Bharatiya Janata Party and currently the Governor of Maharashtra. He has also held the additional charge of the Governor of Goa. Koshyari, who was active in politics since his student days, was elected General Secretary of the Student Union of Almora College in 1961. In 1975, he had to spend nearly two and a half years in jail for opposing the Emergency, which gave him national recognition. He studied elementary education from Almora and English literature from Agra University.

Koshyari, associated with RSS, was the first state president of Uttarakhand BJP and also the national general secretary of BJP. After the formation of Uttarakhand state, he became a cabinet minister and was the second Chief Minister of the state from 30 October 2001 to 1 March 2002. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly from 2002 to 2007, BJP State President from 2007 to 2009. Elected to Rajya Sabha from 2008 to 2014 and Lok Sabha MP from Nainital in 2014. Due to his long organizational experience, he was appointed the Governor of Maharashtra.
