Jagran correspondent, New Delhi. On Monday, the first day of the AI Summit in the capital, the traffic system was affected throughout the day due to the VVIP movement. Long queues of vehicles started forming on the major roads of New Delhi district since morning and as the day progressed, the scope of the jam kept expanding. The situation became so bad that by late evening the traffic control room received more than 12 calls about the jam, with most of the complaints being lodged from the New Delhi area. People also shared their problems on internet media and demanded immediate relief from the administration.

In view of AI, the traffic police had already issued an advisory and appealed to the people to use alternative routes, but its effect was negligible at the ground level. Since Monday morning, due to VVIP movement, barricading was done on many routes, due to which the pressure on normal traffic suddenly increased. Its direct impact was seen on major routes like Bhairon Marg, Shahjahan Road, Mathura Road and C-Hexagon, where vehicles kept crawling for hours. At many places, it took people more than half an hour to travel just a few kilometres.

The impact of the jam was not limited only to New Delhi district, but the traffic system broke down in the areas of Central district also. The situation worsened further during office hours, when a large number of vehicles took to the roads simultaneously. Traffic came to a complete halt at many intersections, due to which the frustration of the drivers came out openly. The situation became more complicated when the spectators who came to watch the ongoing cricket match at Arun Jaitley Stadium parked haphazardly on the roadside. Due to this the width of the road decreased and the traffic pressure increased manifold.

At many places, drivers were seen getting out of their vehicles and pleading with the traffic police to clear the jam. Although at many points the traffic personnel were diligently working to clear the jam, but at some places the situation worsened due to their absence. By evening the traffic jam became severe and the problems of the people returning home increased manifold.
