State Bureau, Patna. The footpath is for pedestrians only. For this purpose, instructions have been given to free the footpaths from encroachment in all areas of the state by 31st March. Development Commissioner Mihir Kumar Singh has given instructions regarding this to the Urban Development and Housing Department in a high level meeting held recently on road safety.
Along with this, by identifying the places most likely to have road accidents in rural and urban areas, footpaths will also be constructed for the convenience of pedestrians. Keeping in mind the road safety standards, instructions have been given to identify the crowded places especially in the urban areas of the state and build footpaths as soon as possible.
In fact, there are temporary and permanent encroachments on footpaths in various cities of the state. In this, due to illegal expansion of shops, street vendors, storage of construction materials, private vehicle parking and other commercial uses, pedestrians have to walk on the road. As a result, the possibility of accidents increases and poses a risk to both drivers and pedestrians.
This problem is more serious especially around schools, hospitals, market areas, bus stands, railway stations and major intersections. Instructions have been given to ensure smooth movement of pedestrians by removing encroachments at such places. The footpaths have been asked to be restored to their original form and kept safe only for pedestrian traffic.
