Jagran correspondent, Chandigarh. Now lack of money will not deprive any patient of complex spine surgery. A study by PGI Chandigarh has revealed that Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) has made expensive spine surgery accessible to economically weaker patients.
According to this study conducted by the Orthopedic Department of PGI, out of the total 410 spine surgeries conducted between January 2023 and December 2024, 67.3 percent of the surgeries were done under the Ayushman scheme. At the same time, there has been a sharp decline in the number of patients undergoing self-payment treatment.
According to the study, while in 2023, 58.7 percent spine surgeries were done under the Ayushman scheme, in 2024 this figure increased to 73.5 percent. During the same period, the number of patients getting treatment at their own expense decreased from 37.8 percent to 18.9 percent.
The report said that maximum 46.1 percent of the cases were due to age-related diseases of the spine, while 33.4 percent of the patients were suffering from accidents. Complex surgeries like trauma, tumor, infection and spinal deformity were also done under the Ayushman scheme.
Director of PGI Prof. Vivek Lal said that Ayushman Bharat has made access to treatment equal. He said that now it is not the patient's pocket but his need that decides whether he will get a complex surgery or not. Experts say that with timely spine surgery, permanent paralysis and long-term disability can be avoided, allowing patients to return to normal life and work.
