When did Gamcha get political recognition?
The Assamese Gamcha got recognition as a symbol of Assamese nationalism in the year 1916 when 'Assam Chhatra Sanmilan' and 'Assamese Sahitya Sabha' were formed. After the formation of these organizations, Phoolam Gamcha got a cultural identity and within no time it became the culture of Assam. After this, from 1979 to 1985, this Gamchha was used extensively in the Assam movement. In the year 2019 also, during the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, this Gamchha once again came into limelight and this Gamchha once again became a symbol of political unity and protest.
