Air pollution levels have become severe in Delhi-NCR, with AQI reaching 428 on Saturday evening.

Jagran correspondent, New Delhi. The level of air pollution in Delhi-NCR is deteriorating rapidly. On Saturday (January 17, 2026), Delhi's Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 400 at 4 pm, which increased to 428 at 8 pm. This sharp rise has occurred due to western disturbances, adverse weather conditions and reduction in the spread of pollutants.

In view of the situation, the GRAP Sub-Committee of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has decided to implement all the stringent measures of Stage-IV of GRAP ('Severe+' category, Delhi AQI > 450) with immediate effect. This decision will be applicable in the entire area of NCR.

CAQM clarified that this step has been taken as a proactive measure to prevent further increase in pollution. Stage-IV measures will be in addition to the existing restrictions of Stage-I, II and III.

Main restrictions included in GRAP Stage-IV

Pollution control boards and related agencies of NCR have been directed to further intensify prevention measures. CAQM said that vigilance should be taken at all levels to prevent the spread of pollution.

Experts say fog and low wind speeds in January allow pollutants to accumulate. Health risks increase when AQI is 400+ in Delhi, especially for children, elderly and respiratory patients. People have been appealed to use public transport, use less private vehicles and wear masks.
