Reality Of TB Treatment In Ranchi: 155 Deaths In 12 Months, Only 89% Patients Recovered, How To Identify The Disease

The success rate of TB treatment in Ranchi district was 89 percent.

Jagran correspondent, Ranchi. Despite the efforts being made under the National Tuberculosis Eradication Program (TB) in the capital Ranchi district, 100% treatment of TB patients still remains a big challenge.

According to the report of the District Health Committee and the District TB Centre, in the last 12 months, only 89 percent of the patients suffering from TB in the district recovered completely, while 155 patients died during treatment. There is a huge disparity in the success rate of treatment in different blocks of the district.

The situation in Namkum block was found to be the worst, where the success rate of TB treatment was only 71 percent. According to the report, currently 752 TB patients are on treatment in Namkum, out of which 639 patients have been given treatment and nutritional support, while 46 patients are away from it.

Due to distance, these patients are not able to get nutritional support and regular social support, which is affecting the continuity of treatment. Doctors say that it is not possible to eradicate TB with medicine alone.

Along with treatment, nutrition, regular counseling and social support are very important. According to experts, the tendency to leave treatment midway and delay in the consent process is also increasing the risk of drug-resistant TB.

Public vs Private Health System

According to the data of the District TB Centre, the success rate of treatment in the public health system has been recorded at 87 percent, while in the private health sector this rate was 92 percent. However, the major burden of total TB patients is on the public health system.

Ranchi Civil Surgeon Dr. Prabhat Kumar believes that the reasons behind the higher percentage of treatment in the private sector are limited number of patients, better follow-up and financial capability.

At the same time, under the Prime Minister TB Free India Campaign (Nikshay Mitra Yojana), a total of 4569 TB patients are currently on treatment in the district. Of these, 3317 patients have given consent for their treatment under the scheme, while the consent of 549 patients is still pending.

Due to lack of consent, these patients are not getting regular nutrition kits and social support, which is affecting the success rate of treatment. A total of 6073 nutrition kits have been distributed in the district so far, but inequality in distribution has also emerged.

While the highest number of 2105 nutrition kits have been distributed in Namkum, the number of kits was very less in blocks like Ratu (53), Lapung (32) and Budhmu (55). Efforts are being made towards eradicating TB in the district, but without coordination of treatment, nutrition and social support, achieving 100% success still remains a distant challenge.

The District Health Committee has prepared a new strategy for the year 2026, which includes special focus on vulnerable blocks like Namkum, linking patients with the scheme pending consent, active patient search campaign in high risk areas and strict monitoring of patients leaving treatment.
