Anoop Kumar Singh, New Delhi. After the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the activeness of the Central Government, there has been a significant increase in the field of organ transplantation in the country, but the long waiting list of patients waiting for organ donation remains a big challenge.
According to the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTO), a total of 18,911 organ transplants were conducted across the country in the year 2024, which is the highest annual figure so far. In the year 2013 this number was only 4,990. Thus, organ donation cases have increased almost four times in a decade.
The list of patients is long
In the year 2024, 13,476 kidney transplants, 4,901 liver transplants, 253 heart, lung and other organ transplants were completed in the country. India now ranks third in the world in terms of total transplant numbers. Despite this, there remains a huge gap between demand and availability. According to the current data of NOTO, more than 82,000 patients are registered in the waiting list for organ transplant across the country. These include more than 60,000 kidney, more than 18,000 liver, and the remaining heart and lung patients.
Transplants depend on living donors
According to experts, the deceased donor rate in India is still less than one per million population, which is much lower than global standards. This is why most transplants rely on living donors.
Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda had said on the occasion of Indian Organ Donation Day that this achievement in organ donation cases is the result of the cooperation of medical experts, coordinators and relatives of organ donors. He had said that the government is further strengthening the transparent allocation system, green corridor system and public awareness campaigns.
While the progress is encouraging, the growing waiting list indicates that continued efforts towards awareness, acceptance of deceased organ donation and expansion of health infrastructure are required so that thousands of patients can get life support in time.
