Digital Desk, New Delhi. 'Resort politics' is once again being seen in Mumbai politics. Soon after the results of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections were announced, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena has started shifting its elected councilors to five star hotels.

This exercise of Shinde group is being linked to power mathematics and future politics. BJP-Shiv Sena (Shinde) alliance has crossed majority in Mumbai BMC elections and Shinde faction has come into the role of 'kingmaker'. According to sources, two major reasons are believed to be behind this step.

BJP-Shiv Sena cross majority

Sources say that the Shinde group is being cautious to keep its councilors together and avoid any kind of sabotage. The majority figure is 114 out of total 227 seats of BMC. BJP has won 89 seats, while Shinde faction's Shiv Sena has won 29 seats. Together the seats of both become 118 seats, which is more than the majority.

On the other hand, in the opposition camp, Shiv Sena (UBT), Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) and NCP (Sharad Pawar) had contested the elections together. Shiv Sena (UBT) got 65 seats, MNS got 6 and NCP (SP) got only 1 seat, i.e. total 72 seats. Apart from this, Congress has won 24 seats, AIMIM 8 and Samajwadi Party 2 seats. If the entire opposition unites then their total strength reaches 106 seats.

In this situation, the opposition will need only 8 more councilors to have majority. In view of this possibility, the possibility of horse-trading and defection is being raised. If the opposition succeeds in breaking away 8 councilors from the grand alliance, then the plan of capturing BMC under the leadership of BJP may face a setback.

What is the meaning of resort strategy?

Shinde faction's 'resort strategy' is also being linked to bargaining with BJP. According to sources, Shiv Sena (Shinde) is in no mood to give up its claim on the post of BMC mayor. There is pressure within the party that the mayor should remain with Shiv Sena.

Sources say that many councilors want that the Shinde faction should not make any compromise on the post of Mayor despite being the junior partner. This is why this step has been taken to keep the councilors united and strengthen their position.
