Dialogue partner, Jagran Roorkee. Roorkee Roadways Depot is going through a period of serious disorganization these days. Bus operations are being affected due to acute shortage of drivers. This has had a direct impact on earning routes like Delhi. The situation is such that the frequency of buses has to be reduced even on the routes with highest demand for passengers, due to which the corporation is incurring loss of revenue.
A total of 30 roadways buses of the corporation are available in Roorkee depot, but there are only four regular drivers to drive them. Apart from this, 12 contract drivers are deployed, who are providing services as per requirement. Due to shortage of drivers, regular operation of buses is not possible.
The Depot to Delhi route is considered to be the highest revenue generator, but here too, due to compulsion, the frequency of buses has been reduced from 22 to 12. At present, mostly contracted buses of outsourced companies are being sent on the Delhi route. On the contrary, the corporation's own buses remain standing in the depot due to lack of drivers.
Depot in-charge AGM Amita Saini said that in view of the shortage of drivers, the frequency of buses on long routes has been reduced. He said that efforts are being made to reduce the problems of passengers, but shortage of staff remains a big challenge.
At present, efforts are being intensified at the government level for temporary appointment of drivers. Roorkee depot is expected to get a driver. At the same time, local passengers say that due to decrease in the number of buses, they are not able to get vehicles for Delhi and other cities on time. If drivers are not arranged soon, the situation may worsen.
