Strange Lyrics... Yet The Songs Are Superhit, From FA9LA To Kolaveri D, Kishore Kumar's Song Also Included

When songs with strange lyrics became superhits

Entertainment Desk, New Delhi. Even before the advent of playlists, reels and algorithms, Indian cinema was having fun with lyrics that had no direct meaning, but were very catchy. The latest example of this is the song 'Fa9la' from 'Dhurandhar', which has taken the internet by storm with its swag-filled beats and strange phrasing. Featuring Akshaye Khanna in a very intense avatar, the song proves that the mood and vibe of a song often matters more than the meaning. From playful irreverence to cultural mashups, these songs show how offbeat lyrics have always thrilled Indian audiences.

Ever since ‘Fa9la’ hit the internet, it has been all over the place. Artists Flipperachi and Daffy have come together in the song 'Fa9la' from Bahrain and DJ Outlaw has handled the music. The song is from 'Dhurandhar' starring Akshaye Khanna and blends hip-hop beats with traditional Khaleeji style. The word 'Fa9la' is said to mean fun time or party, which matches the upbeat and celebratory atmosphere of the song perfectly. The song went viral because the funky, swag-filled atmosphere of the song perfectly matched Akshaye Khanna's cool but dangerous on-screen persona. The special thing is that Akshay had choreographed himself for this song and immediately before the shot, he had sought permission from the director to do a light dance.

The song became an instant hit in late 2023 and marked the entry of villain Abrar in the film. The song is actually a new version of 'Jamal Jamalu', an old Iranian folk song from the 1950s. It has been recreated by Harshvardhan Rameshwar. Bobby Deol, who is seen in the song, also shared a personal memory of his childhood. He told that when he used to go to Punjab during summer and winter holidays, people used to drink alcohol at night and when music played, they used to dance with glasses and bottles on their heads. Inspired by this, Bobby decided to try it himself, he did not know that his unique dance style would become so popular.

Released in 2011, this song redefined viral fame in India. It was composed by Anirudh Ravichander in just 10 minutes for the film '3'. It was sung by Dhanush himself and was marketed as a soup song, which is slang for a song about a boy who fails in love. It became famous worldwide because of its simple, broken-down Tanglish (Tamil-English) lyrics. Dhanush completed the song in about 20 minutes while singing and writing in a fun style. The first line he sang was, ‘Why This Kolaveri?’ It was the first Indian video to cross 100 million views on YouTube, proving that simplicity works better than artificiality.

My name is Chin Chin Chu (Howrah Bridge)

This 1958 hit song gave Helen recognition as the uncrowned 'Cabaret Queen' of Bollywood. This song was sung by Geeta Dutt, which had a catchy and unique tune. Helen's tremendous performance and the fast tempo of the song made it famous. Qamar Jalalabadi wrote the lyrics and chose the title 'Chin Chin Chu' to give the character an East Asian identity in keeping with the film's noir concept. Due to its unique and upbeat tune, it is still one of the most famous songs of the Golden Era.

Eena Meena Deeka (Hope)

This 1957 classic song is the originator of offbeat lyrics in India. The song was sung by the legendary Kishore Kumar and introduced Indian listeners to scat singing – a jazz vocal style that uses syllables without words. The lyrics of 'Eena Meena Deeka' are completely meaningless, made to sound like a foreign language to the local audience. It became famous for its high energy and 'rock and roll' vibe, which was new to Bollywood in 1957. It showcased Kishore Da's talent of using his voice as a musical instrument.
