Strictness on stubble burning

Jagran correspondent, Bhabua. The administration has taken a strict stance against farmers who burn crop residue in the fields in the district. In the monitoring done by the Agriculture Department through satellite, so far 208 farmers have been identified ignoring crop residue management. The registration of all these farmers has been locked, due to which now they will not be able to avail the benefits of any welfare scheme of the Agriculture Department. Also, government procurement of paddy and wheat will not be done from these farmers.

According to the information received from the Agriculture Department, this action has been taken with the aim of stopping the continuously increasing incidents of stubble burning. Burning of stubble left in the fields after harvesting of Rabi and Kharif crops, on the one hand, has an adverse effect on soil fertility, and on the other hand, it also causes serious harm to the environment and human health. Despite this, many farmers are not desisting from the trend of burning stubble.

According to departmental data, 2453 fire points were identified in the district in the year 2024. On the basis of this, the registration of 495 farmers was locked and an FIR was also lodged against one farmer. So far in the current year 2025, similar action has been taken against 208 farmers, which clearly shows that the administration is in no mood to show any laxity on this issue.

According to agricultural experts, burning of crop residues causes huge damage to the soil. Due to this, 100 percent nitrogen, 25 percent phosphorus, 20 percent potash and about 60 percent sulfur is destroyed. Due to the structure of the soil getting affected, the nutrients are not transferred properly and the water holding capacity also decreases. Apart from this, friendly insects, earthworms and micro-organisms living on the upper surface of the field are destroyed, which naturally maintain the fertility of the soil.

Serious side effects of stubble burning are also being seen on human health. The smoke emanating from it promotes respiratory diseases like asthma and asthma. Sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides cause problems like eye irritation, skin diseases and breathing problems. Experts say that the number of patients suffering from these diseases is continuously increasing.

Burning crop residues is also very harmful from environmental point of view. This increases carbon dioxide emissions, which accelerates global warming. Besides, the ozone layer is also damaged. Trees and plants present on the banks of fields also get damaged due to fire.

District Agriculture Officer Vikas Kumar said that farmers are constantly being made aware not to burn stubble. Its adverse effects are being explained to the farmers through publicity vehicles at the block level. He said that the Agriculture Department is also providing agricultural equipment at subsidized rates to use crop residue as fodder. Despite this, action will continue against farmers who violate the rules.

Among the block-wise registration locked farmers in the year 2025, 43 farmers are included in Bhabua, 35 in Chand, 25 in Rampur, 26 in Mohania and 32 in Nuaon. Whereas in the year 2024, maximum action was taken in Bhabua (125) and Chand (101) blocks. The administration has a clear message that strict action will be taken against those who burn stubble.
