New Delhi. Can the salary of a government sweeper be Rs 2 lakh per month? This salary figure may surprise you but it is true. In fact, the monthly expenditure on salaries and pensions of employees in the Telangana government has increased four times in the last decade, and senior category IV employees like sweepers in power companies are now getting around Rs 2 lakh per month.
State Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao on Wednesday said the state's monthly expenditure on salaries and pensions has increased from Rs 1,500 crore in 2014 (when Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh) to Rs 6,000 crore. According to a TOI report, this shows a 300 per cent increase in fixed expenses, mainly due to the wage revisions coinciding with the elections.

Addressing a conference on the recommendations of the 16th Finance Commission organized by the Center for Economic and Social Studies (CESS), Rao elaborated on the salary structure, where public sector salaries are now higher than those of top bureaucrats and even the constitutional head of the state.

However, this salary structure is not limited to the power sector only. According to sources, the salary of the starting employees of the Municipal Corporation is also around Rs 28,000 per month. Drivers and sanitation workers with more than three decades of service can earn a salary of more than Rs 1 lakh. In the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, two per cent of the regularized sanitation workers get an average of Rs 70,000 per month in addition to allowances.
