Sharp turning section of Bhandari Bagh Railway Over Bridge. Awakening

Suman Semwal, Dehradun. The case of death of 27-year-old software engineer Yuvraj in Noida after he fell into a water-filled pit of a construction site along with his car is in the news across the country. More than a road accident, this death exposes the negligence of the system.

In the list of negligence, a sharp 90 degree turn at the accident site also raises questions on the condition of road construction. The Balliwala flyover of the capital Dehradun is already infamous for accidents occurring due to defects in road projects. So far 16 youth have died due to its narrowness and 35 degree turn. The government machinery has not corrected this black spot till date, but the same flaw has been repeated in a more dangerous form in the Bhandari Bagh Railway Over Bridge (ROB). The ROB has been given an extreme rotation of 85 degrees.

Bhandari Bagh Railway Over Bridge is still under construction. There is still scope for improvement in this, but the officials are not ready to pay attention to it. Just the 85 degree turn on the double lane over bridge is enough to make it dangerous. The serious thing is that even after the sharp turn, its safety audit has not been done yet. Same thing happened with Balliwala flyover. When the construction was going on, the flaws were ignored and when accidents started happening one after the other, safety audits and other safety measures were taken. However, after construction, it was not possible to improve the original design of the flyover which was full of flaws. The railway over bridge of Bhandari Bagh is also moving in the same direction.

Alignment of shield with rotation not confirmed without safety audit

In any road project with sharp turns, its slope also matters. It is now part of the Super Elevation. But, due to safety audit not being conducted, the clouds of apprehension regarding the situation of the 85 degree turn will remain deep.

There is a sharp turn on the part connecting the approach road to the main bridge.

The approach of Bhandari Bagh Railway Over Bridge starting from the Bhandari Bagh end and the part connecting to the main bridge has been given a sharp turn. The approach road at the end of the rest camp has not yet taken shape. Therefore, the picture is not clear at the turn there. Yet the size of the project suggests that a similar sharp turn will occur at the other end.

Road projects with sharp curves are becoming the cause of accidents across the country.

Necessary safety standards are adopted at the time of project design. The project is currently under construction. Safety audit will be conducted immediately after the completion of construction.- Neeraj Tripathi, Executive Engineer, PWD Construction Division
