Jagran correspondent, Gorakhpur. The new year 2026 is bringing big achievements for the health system of Purvanchal. BRD Medical College and District Hospital, which have been suffering from lack of resources, crowd of patients and referrals for a long time, will now see major changes. A 182-bed state-of-the-art critical care facility will be started for the treatment of serious patients.
The biggest relief for heart patients will be that now bypass surgery will be possible in Gorakhpur only. Till now, for serious heart surgeries, patients had to go to Lucknow, Varanasi or Delhi, which consumed a lot of time and money.
A 100-bed level-two trauma centre, 50-bed critical care unit (CCU) is under construction at BRD Medical College, which is expected to be ready in the new year. ICU with 32 beds is ready. It will be made operational in the early months of the new year. With this, patients suffering from road accidents, severe head injury, multi trauma, sepsis, heart attack and brain stroke will be able to get immediate high level treatment.
Till now the situation has been such that due to shortage of ICU beds, serious patients either had to wait or were referred. Many times delay in treatment proved fatal. The addition of 182 new beds will provide relief not only to the patients of Gorakhpur but also of Gorakhpur-Basti division. This will also significantly reduce the referral rate.
The most important achievement will be the expansion of heart disease services in the super specialty block of BRD Medical College. Preparations to start heart bypass surgery here have been completed. For this, a team of cardiac vascular thoracic surgeons will come from Lakshmipati Singhania Institute located in Kanpur. Initially surgeries will be performed on selected patients, later it will be developed as a regular service.
Along with this, arrangements for cath lab, cardiac ICU and post-operative care are also being strengthened. This initiative will not be limited to just BRD. Major changes will also be made in the district hospital and rural health infrastructure. Primary Health Centers (PHC) and Community Health Centers (CHC) will be equipped with modern facilities, so that common patients do not have to run to medical colleges for minor problems.
The plan to install a 128-slice state-of-the-art CT scan machine in the district hospital is also in the final stages. This will make the diagnosis of brain stroke, accident, cancer and complex diseases more accurate. Besides, a six-bed trauma center will also be started in the district hospital, so that accident victims in the city and surrounding areas can get immediate treatment. However, the challenges are also no less. The biggest need will be the availability of new buildings and machines as well as trained human resources. For this, doctors, nurses and technical staff are required. The Health Department claims that work is being done rapidly in this direction also.
15 PHCs will be rejuvenated. 15 primary health centers in the district will be rejuvenated in the new year. Modern testing facilities along with building repair, cleanliness, electricity and water arrangements will be developed at these PHCs. OPD, availability of medicines and lab testing will be strengthened here. Special services will start for pregnant women, children and the elderly. With this, patients from rural areas will not have to come to the city for treatment of minor diseases and the pressure of patients on the District Hospital, AIIMS and BRD Medical College will also reduce.
128 slice CT scan machine will be installed in the district hospital. There will be a big improvement in the testing facilities with the installation of 128 slice state-of-the-art CT scan machine in the district hospital. This machine will be helpful in accurate diagnosis of brain stroke, head injury, lung and heart diseases. Currently, patients have to go to private centers for CT scan, which increases the financial burden. The new machine will not only save time but will also provide affordable and quality testing to needy patients.
Trauma center will be started in the district hospital. In view of the increasing road accidents in the city, a trauma center will be started in the district hospital. Here, accident victims will get immediate first aid, surgery and ICU facilities. This will reduce the compulsion to send serious patients directly to BRD. With the operationalization of the Trauma Center, treatment will be possible during the 'Golden Hour', due to which the chances of saving life will increase manifold. The Trauma Center is ready, preparations are underway to make it operational in the new year.
AIIMS and BRD prescriptions will be made at CHC: To provide relief to rural patients, prescriptions for AIIMS and BRD Medical College will be made at the CHC level. Preparations for this are going on. With this, referred patients will not have to go to AIIMS and BRD and stand in line to get their prescription made. They will be able to go directly to the OPD and consult a doctor on the same day.
With the completion of these schemes, the treatment system will be further strengthened. This will not only benefit the patients but will also promote medical education and research. Preparations are also underway to increase the number of doctors and nursing staff, install modern machines and expand digital health services. -Dr. Rajesh Jha, CMO
