Lyon made a wonderful comeback and dismissed two English batsmen in his first over and broke Glenn McGrath's record. Now Nathan Lyon has become the second Australian bowler to take the most wickets in Test history.
38-year-old Lyon took 564 wickets in the 141st Test of his career. He achieved this feat by bowling Ben Duckett on the second day of the ongoing third Test in Adelaide. Sri Lanka's great off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan holds the record for taking the most wickets in Test cricket. Murali took 800 wickets in 133 Tests between 1992 and 2010. He took these wickets at an average of 22.72. Muralitharan took 800 wickets representing both the ICC and Sri Lanka.
Australia's late leg spinner Shane Warne holds the second place in terms of taking the most wickets in Test history. Warne took 708 wickets in 145 Tests between 1992 and 2007. He took these wickets at an average of 25.41.
Former England fast bowler James Anderson took 704 wickets in 188 Tests between 2003 and 2024. The former veteran pacer took these wickets at an average of 26.45. He is at third place in the list of taking most wickets in Test history.
India's former great leg spinner is at fourth position in this special list. Kumble played 132 Tests between 1990 and 2008, taking 619 wickets. Kumble, popularly known as Jumbo, had a career average of 29.65.
Former England fast bowlers complete the top-5 list of this exclusive club. Broad took 604 wickets in 167 Test matches between 2007 and 2023. Broad's career average was 27.68.
Nathan Lyon has jumped one place to sixth in this exclusive club. Lyon is the only active cricketer in the top-10 list. He took 564th wicket in his 141st test.
Former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath has slipped one place to seventh position. McGrath took 563 wickets in 124 Tests between 1993 and 2007. McGrath's career average of 21.64 is the best among the top-10 bowlers.
Former Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is also a part of this exclusive club. Ashwin took 537 wickets in 106 tests between 2011 and 2024. Ashwin's career average was 24.
Former West Indies fast bowler Courtney Walsh became the first bowler in the world to take 500 Test wickets. The former Caribbean bowler took 519 wickets in 132 Tests between 1984 and 2001. His career average was 24.44.
Former South African fast bowler Dale Steyn completes the list of top-10 bowlers taking the most wickets in Test history. Steyn took 439 wickets in 93 Tests between 2004 and 2019. His career average was 22.95.
