Jagran correspondent, Angul. Ahead of the 77th Republic Day, Odisha Police on Thursday hoisted the national flag on the uninhabited Udayabali island near Dhamra port in Bhadrak district, giving a strong message of its commitment towards coastal security and national sovereignty. In this special program, Director General of Police (DGP) Yogesh Bahadur Khurania was present as the chief guest and hoisted the national flag.

Addressing the gathering, the DGP saluted the courage, sacrifice and dedication of the security forces who remain alert day and night to protect India's long coastline. He said that Odisha Police has prepared a long-term action plan to modernize and strengthen the coastal security infrastructure, for which the state government has made a provision of Rs 149 crore in the budget for the current financial year.

The DGP said that this amount will be used to purchase engine-driven boats and trawlers for maritime patrolling, equipping each marine police station with drones, appointment of naval experts and technical advisors, deployment of special marine police officers at fish landing centers and making community policing in coastal areas more effective.

Along with this, CCTV cameras will be installed at fish landing centers and control centers will be set up at marine police stations. All these facilities will be linked to the state-of-the-art Command and Control Center located in Bhubaneswar, which will significantly enhance maritime surveillance and quick response capability.

Expressing gratitude to the state government, DGP Khurania said that hoisting the national flag on the uninhabited coastal islands is a symbol of the unwavering resolve of the Odisha Police, strong belief in the security of the country's land and sea and unwavering commitment towards protecting the national sovereignty.

He expressed his gratitude to the Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard, Customs Department, Fisheries Department, Intelligence Department, Forest Department, State Police personnel, local residents and fishermen for their cooperation in making the program a success.

It is noteworthy that during the All India Police Directors General Conference held in Odisha in November 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had directed that the national flag should be hoisted on the uninhabited islands of the coastal states on Republic Day or a day before. In compliance with this, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Manjhi had given instructions to identify uninhabited coastal islands of the state and organize flag hoisting programs.

Under this, in the next three days, the national flag will also be hoisted at Kanika Sands, Long Wheeler (Babubaali), Coconut Wheeler, Small Wheeler, Nayatapu, Buddhiya Bali and Hukitola of Kendrapara district, Kaduapala, Dhanichhra and Parikud of Puri district, and Nalban and Kalijai Islands.

Many senior officers, representatives and personnel related to coastal security including ADGP (Railway and Coastal Security) Arun Bothra, DIG (Northern Range) Pinak Mishra, Bhadrak SP Manoj Raut, AIG (Marine) Satyajit Mishra were present in the program organized at Udayabali Island.
