Jagran correspondent, Basti. People from the upper caste community took to the streets on Monday to protest against the policies related to the guidelines recently issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC). A large number of youth, advocates, intellectuals and social workers participated in this demonstration organized on the call of various organizations of the upper caste community.

The protesters expressed their displeasure by taking out a foot march from the grounds of GIC (Government Inter College) to the court and demanded the government to immediately withdraw these controversial rules. Civil Bar Association General Secretary Marut Kumar Shukla, Santosh Tiwari and many other people were involved in this. The city echoed with slogans. The protesters had started gathering at the GIC ground from 11 am itself. The procession that started from here reached the court complex via Gandhi Nagar, the main road of the city. During the procession, the protesters were holding placards and banners with slogans like 'UGC's dictatorship will not last' and 'Give equal opportunities' written on them. Due to the protest, the traffic system of the city was also affected for some time, the police force had to make a lot of efforts to make it smooth.

The main issue raised in the memorandum is that after reaching Chahari, the protesters held a meeting where the speakers described the current policies of the UGC as being against the interests of the meritorious youth of the upper caste community. After this, a delegation submitted a memorandum addressed to the President and the Prime Minister through the District Magistrate.

Representatives of the upper caste community leading the protest said that we are not against any class, but the new rules of UGC are putting the future of talented students of general category in darkness. If the government does not remove these anomalies in time and does not withdraw the black law, then this movement will take an even more violent form.
