To develop an environment-friendly urban transport system in Uttarakhand, preparations for ambitious projects like Metro Rail, E-BRT and Ropeway have been intensified in major cities including Dehradun. In a meeting chaired by Housing Secretary Dr. R Rajesh Kumar at the Secretariat, Managing Director, UKMRC informed that the UKMRC Board has given in-principle consent to implement the e-BRT (Electric Bus Rapid Transit System) project on two major corridors in Dehradun city. Necessary studies will be conducted for this. After the study the project will be presented to the Cabinet for approval.

Housing Secretary Dr. R. Rajesh Kumar said that in view of the ever-increasing traffic pressure and jam problem in Dehradun city, there is a need for an eco-friendly mass rapid transit system like e-BRT. He said that this project will not only reduce pollution but will also provide fast, safe and affordable transportation facilities to the common citizens.

In the review meeting of the projects run by Uttarakhand Metro Rail Corporation, the proposed Integrated Ropeway Project for Harki Paidi located in Haridwar was also discussed. The Managing Director informed that this project has been approved by the UKMRC Board. The proposal will be submitted to the competent authority soon. The Housing Secretary directed that further action should be ensured by submitting the proposal soon, so that devotees and tourists can get easy transportation facilities.

The Managing Director also gave information regarding the proposed ropeway project from Triveni Ghat to Neelkanth Mahadev Temple. Told that this project has received approval from the National Wildlife Board. The tender process will be started after the completion of the Forest Clearance Stage-1 process. The Secretary directed that after completing all the necessary approvals in a timely manner, the tender process should be started soon, so that safe and convenient travel options can be available to the devotees.

The proposed ropeway projects in Nainital, Kanchi Dham and Mussoorie were also discussed in the meeting. Feasibility studies for these sites are being conducted by UKMRC. Housing Secretary, while appreciating these proposals, said that ropeway projects, especially at tourist places like Nainital and Mussoorie, will prove helpful in reducing traffic jams to a great extent and will also be useful from the point of view of environmental protection.

Brainstorming on second order mass transit in Dehradun

In the meeting, the Secretary was also informed about the possibilities of second order mass transit system in Dehradun city. The Secretary said that it is extremely important to prepare a long-term transport plan keeping in mind the future needs.
