Major operation of US Army in Indian Ocean
Digital Desk, New Delhi. The US Army has taken major action in the Indian Ocean to crack down on the illegal trade of Iranian oil. The US Defense Department Pentagon confirmed that the US Navy intercepted and captured the oil tanker named 'Veronica III' in the middle of the sea.
According to the US Defense Department Pentagon, this action has been taken to prevent 'quarantine' violations imposed by President Donald Trump on Venezuelan oil exports. This operation was carried out with utmost precision by the US Navy.
Maduro was arrested in December
Indeed, Venezuela had been facing US sanctions on its oil for several years and was relying on a secret fleet of false flag tankers to smuggle crude. President Trump ordered the embargo on tankers in December to put pressure on then-President Nicolas Maduro, who was arrested during a US military operation in January.
Several tankers fled the Venezuelan coast following the raid, including a ship that was captured in the Indian Ocean overnight.
What did the US Defense Department say?
The US Department of Defense Pentagon said in a post on
Video posted by the Pentagon showed US troops boarding the tanker. However, the Pentagon did not say in its post whether Veronica III had been formally seized and taken under US control.
According to the website of the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, the Veronica III is a Panama-flagged ship that falls under US sanctions related to Iran.
Tankertrackers.com posted on Sunday that the Veronica III ship departed Venezuela on January 3, the same day Maduro was arrested, carrying about 2 million barrels of crude and fuel oil.
