State Bureau, Jagran, Dehradun. With the increasing severity of winter, the demand for electricity in the state is increasing rapidly. The increasing use of heaters, geysers and other electrical appliances is directly impacting the power system of the state. This month's figures show that the gap between electricity availability and demand is continuously increasing in Uttarakhand, leading to energy shortage.
According to the Energy Department's Daily Power System Energy Report, till mid-December the state is recording an average power demand of more than 40 to 45 million units per day, while the total availability is limited to around 25 million units. To bridge this gap, the state is dependent on central share, power purchase and banking power from other states. Despite this, electricity shortage of about 20 million units is continuously being recorded.
Data from the last one week show that the state faced severe power shortage almost every day between December 13 and 19. The greatest pressure was on December 17 and 18, when demand reached above 45 million units and a shortfall of more than 21 million units was recorded against availability.

As the temperature goes down, the demand for electricity at both domestic and commercial levels will increase further. If there is no proportionate increase in supply, the state will have to spend more on purchasing additional power in the coming days. Situation for the last one week - (Figures in million units)
