Jagran correspondent, Patna. This moment has become historic for Bihar cricket. 14-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi, resident of Tajpur in Samastipur district, has performed such a feat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, which has attracted the attention of not only Indian cricket but also world cricket. In the match played against Arunachal Pradesh, Vaibhav broke the 39-year-old world record of being the youngest person to score a century in List-A cricket by scoring a century in just 36 balls.
This match was played at JSCA Oval Ground in Ranchi, where Vaibhav, who came as the vice-captain of Bihar, presented a wonderful example of aggressive batting.
He played an explosive inning of 190 runs in 84 balls. During this period, 16 fours and 15 sixes came from his bat. He completed his century by taking one run on the first ball of the 12th over and filled the audience with thrill.
Earlier this record was in the name of Pakistan's Zahoor Elahi, who scored a century in List-A cricket at the age of 15 years and 209 days against Railways during the Wills Cup in 1986. Vaibhav created history by achieving this feat at an even younger age than him.
This display of glory is not limited to any one match. They have been continuously breaking record after record. Earlier, he had set a new record by hitting 14 sixes against UAE in Youth ODI.
In the Under-19 Asia Cup, he scored 171 runs in 95 balls, which included 14 sixes and 9 fours. With this innings, he became the batsman who hit the most sixes in Youth ODI. He broke Australia's Michael Hill's record of 12 sixes made in 2008.
On the basis of Vaibhav's batting, the Indian team also made the highest score of Youth ODI till date. The team scored 433 runs, which is more than the previous record of 425 runs set by Dhaka against Scotland. In that match, Aaron George and Vihaan Malhotra also played important innings of 69-69 runs.
Recently, Vaibhav had also created history in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. On 2 December, he scored an unbeaten 108 off 61 balls against Maharashtra at the Eden Gardens.
With this, he became the youngest batsman to score a century in this tournament. The special thing is that at the age of 14, he has already scored three T20 centuries, which is a unique record in itself.
Vaibhav's name is also recorded in the record book in IPL. He became the youngest player in IPL history to score a half-century. He achieved this feat at the age of 14 years and 32 days.
Earlier this record was in the name of Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag, who had scored fifty in 17 years and 175 days.
Behind Vaibhav's success is an inspiring story of struggle and sacrifice. Born on 27 March 2011, Vaibhav started playing cricket at the age of seven.
Recognizing his son's passion, his father Sanjeev Suryavanshi even sold his land for his training. Vaibhav took initial cricket training from Zenith Cricket Academy, Samastipur.
At the age of nine he started practicing regularly at the academy. After this his father brought him to Gen X Cricket Academy located in Sampatchak, Patna. At the age of just 10, Vaibhav started scoring runs in big level matches.
Vaibhav's coach Brajesh tells that he is a very hardworking player. Even in the scorching heat, he used to practice from 10 am to 3:30 pm.
He had a separate special practice session of 5 to 6 hours in the academy, in which senior players also used to practice with him.
According to the coach, Vaibhav's father Sanjeev used to take him to watch matches about 100 kilometers away every other day. Not only this, when Vaibhav used to do extra training, his father would also bring tiffin for all the fellow players, so that the bowlers could practice for longer time.
However, controversies have arisen from time to time regarding Vaibhav's age. Some reports raised questions about his age, but his father got a medical examination done, in which his age was found to be correct.
Bihar state coach Pramod Kumar has described Vaibhav as a calm natured and dedicated player for cricket. According to him, Vaibhav is a player who is made only to play cricket.
