Waterborne Diseases Wreak Havoc In Jammu And Kashmir, More Than One Lakh Cases Every Year; Know What Is The Reason Behind This?

State Bureau, Jammu. Corruption and apathy of government departments in implementing government schemes is affecting the health of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Every year, on an average, more than one lakh cases of water-borne diseases are coming to hospitals. Jammu, Srinagar and Shopian districts are the most affected. Half of the cases occur in these three districts only.

According to data received from the Health Department, a large number of cases of jaundice, diarrhea, hepatitis, dysentery and typhoid come to hospitals. In the year 2023, a total of 1,02,236 cases were reported in various hospitals of Jammu and Kashmir. These included 1428 cases of jaundice, 57,184 cases of diarrhea, 7904 cases of hepatitis, 9391 cases of dysentery and 26,329 cases of typhoid.

In the year 2024, 1,30,100 cases of waterborne diseases were recorded in the hospitals of Jammu and Kashmir. These included 1309 cases of jaundice, 81,007 cases of diarrhea, 10190 cases of hepatitis, 10,795 cases of dysentery and 26,799 cases of typhoid. In Jammu district alone, 18,234 cases of diarrhea were recorded, which is about twenty percent of the total cases.

80 thousand cases have been registered in the first seven months of the year 2025.

More than one lakh thirty thousand cases are expected to occur in the year 2025 also. Eighty thousand cases were registered in the first seven months. After this, severe floods at many places further polluted the water and this also increased the cases in hospitals. A senior health department official said that a large number of cases were registered last year also.

The estimated figures are more than one lakh thirty thousand. Diarrhea cases are highest among these. Epidemiologist Jammu and Kashmir Dr. Harjeet Rai says that cases of water-borne diseases come from all the districts and to stop them, contact is also made with the Jalshakti Department.
