Digital Desk, New Delhi. US President Donald Trump on Wednesday expressed confidence in the India-US bilateral trade agreement (BTA) and said that a good deal is going to be made between the two countries. He also described Prime Minister Narendra Modi as a close friend and respected leader.

Trump made this comment while talking to Indian media after his speech at the 56th annual summit of the World Economic Forum. When asked about the India-US trade deal, Trump said, "I have great respect for your Prime Minister." He's a wonderful person and my friend and we're going to make a good deal."

Earlier, India's Commerce Secretary Rajesh Aggarwal had said that the first tranche of the much-awaited India-US bilateral trade agreement is coming very soon, although he did not give any timeline.

BTA aims to take bilateral trade forward

The BTA aims to increase India-US bilateral trade from the current US$ 191 billion to more than US$ 500 billion by 2030. This conversation was first announced during Prime Minister Modi's visit to Washington in February 2025.

Recently on January 9, the Ministry of External Affairs had said that India and America are committed to negotiating a bilateral trade agreement from February 13 last year. Since then, the two sides have held several rounds of talks to reach a balanced and mutually beneficial trade agreement. The Foreign Ministry spokesperson had further said - "On many occasions we were very close to the deal."
