Digital Desk, New Delhi. A big change is being seen in the politics of Nepal. Former mayor of Kathmandu and famous rapper Balen Shah (35) has emerged as the strongest contender for the post of Prime Minister in the general elections to be held on March 5.
After the youth-led rebellion in September last year that left 77 people dead and led to the resignation of then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, Balen had written on internet media, "Dear Jen-ji, the resignation of your killer has come. Now your generation will have to lead the country. Be ready."
Balen leaving behind the traditional giants, although there are no official opinion polls in Nepal, but political analysts and local media are calling Balen the first choice for the post of Prime Minister. He has given a tough challenge to Nepal's traditional political power - KP Oli's pro-China Communist Party and the Nepali Congress, which is considered close to India.
Promise of balanced relations with neighbors
"Balen is so popular that buses coming to Kathmandu now have stickers saying 'to the city of Balen'," says Bipin Adhikari, a professor at Kathmandu University. Internet Media and Development Model Balen's National Independent Party promises balanced foreign relations with neighbors in its manifesto.
As mayor, his popularity has increased due to improvements in infrastructure and health services, although he has also faced criticism for taking strict action against street vendors.
With over 30.5 million internet media followers, Balen communicates directly with youth rather than through mainstream media. According to analyst Puranjan Acharya, "Balen's specialty is his connection with the youth, but after becoming the Prime Minister, the path will not be so easy for him."
