Will protocol be made for 'Vande Mataram' also? (Image generated from Grok)
Digital Desk, New Delhi. Soon you may have to stand for 'Vande Mataram' like the national anthem 'Jana Gana Mana', because the government is planning to implement the same protocol for the national anthem on its 150th anniversary.
According to sources, the Home Ministry is currently discussing whether the same rules and regulations should apply to Vande Mataram. However, no decision has been taken yet in this regard.
Vande Mataram is a Sanskrit phrase meaning "Mother, I bow to you", which tells a story that blends nationalism, patriotism, spirituality and identity. The slogan 'Vande Mataram', written as a hymn as a part of Bankin Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel 'Anand Math', became a motto for freedom fighters in the movement to liberate India from colonial rule. It was adopted as the national song in the year 1950.
What is the protocol for Vande Martam?
The Prevention of Insults to National Honor Act, 1971, currently applies only to the national anthem. Even Article 51(A) of the Constitution mandates citizens to respect the national anthem, however, there is no provision that mandates people to stand or participate in singing 'Vande Mataram'.
Petitions have been filed in the Supreme Court and several High Courts demanding implementation of the same rules on Vande Mataram. However, the government said that this rule applies only to Jana Gana Mana and not to 'Vande Mataram'.
The Home Ministry instructions specify the duration of the national anthem and what is required during its singing, including mandatory standing of all and singing.
According to legal provisions, anyone who prevents or hinders another from respecting the national anthem can be punished with a jail term of up to three years. Now it is being discussed whether similar provisions can be applied on Vande Mataram also.
