AirDrop interoperability will be rolled out to more phones soon.
Technology Desk, New Delhi. Google has hinted that its AirDrop interoperability may soon be expanded to support more Android smartphones. This information has been received from reports. The Mountain View-based tech giant first announced cross-platform sharing between Android and iOS devices for the Pixel 10 in November 2025, allowing Android users to securely and wirelessly share files with iPhone users using both Quick Share and AirDrop, and vice versa. According to reports, Google has now officially confirmed that AirDrop interoperability will be available for the entire Android ecosystem this year.
AirDrop interoperability on Android to expand beyond Pixel phones in 2026
According to Android Authority, during a press briefing at the Pixel Labs Tour in Taipei, Eric Kay, Android platform's vice president of engineering, confirmed that AirDrop interoperability won't just be on Pixel smartphones in 2026, but moving forward. The tech giant said it is working with partners to expand to the rest of the ecosystem.
However, a definite timeline for the expansion is yet to be announced. But, according to the official statement, users 'may see some exciting announcements very soon'.
Additionally, Google has also hinted at new steps to make it easier for users to switch from iPhone to Android. "We will also work with those who decide to switch so they can easily transfer their data and ensure they retain all the data on their old phone," the publication quoted the official as saying.
Now, the added support for AirDrop in Quick Share makes it possible to transfer files between Android devices and iPhones. This feature also works with iPadOS and macOS devices. On Android, this is limited to the Google Pixel 10 series, which includes the Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Pro Fold.
According to Google, AirDrop interoperability uses peer-to-peer connections rather than a workaround. Because of this, the company claims that data does not route through any server and the shared content is never logged. Quick Share works with AirDrop's 'Everyone for 10 minutes' mode.
Quick Share claims to have cross-platform sharing capabilities with built-in security and privacy safeguards and has been independently tested. Google worked with third-party penetration testing firm NetSPI, and the assessment concluded that the interoperability between Quick Share and AirDrop is secure, "significantly stronger" than other implementations in the industry, and does not leak any information.
