Jagran correspondent, Dharamshala. The first phase of voting for the Prime Minister and members of Parliament of the Tibetan government in exile concluded on Sunday. For this, the Election Commission of the exiled government had created 309 polling stations and deployed 1800 election officers under the supervision of 87 regional election offices in 27 countries. During this period 91,000 Tibetans voted.
An additional 31 polling stations were created for Tibetans living away from settlements during the general election period. The second and final phase of voting will take place on April 26.
Tibetans in exile have sent a message to China through the elections that they have not accepted defeat. Hopes of returning to our country and living there again as before remain intact. Tibetans in other states of India including Dharamshala in Himachal participated in the voting process.
Lobsang Yashi, chief election commissioner of the Central Tibetan Administration, called the vote a sign that Tibetans have not given up. He said, the elections were not just for governance or administration, but for the independence of Tibet.
Challenges were faced during voting due to diplomatic sensitivities in some countries. Yashi said the CTA represents the de facto governance of 7 million Tibetans. He said that despite China's occupation, Tibetans still aspire to a free Tibet. Information about voting percentage will be available after collecting reports of voting conducted in all the countries.
