Big news related to farmers, Farmer ID will be mandatory to buy urea; How to make it? Step by Step Process

New Delhi. The government is making major preparations to streamline the sale of fertilizers. The government can use digital farmer ID to make the process of selling fertilizers easy and systematic. This is the same digital formal ID which new farmers use to register for PM Kisan Yojana. In some states, Kisan Farmer ID has been made mandatory to avail the benefits of PM Kisan Yojana.

The government is working rapidly on making farmer ID. This is a unique identity document (ID) of the farmers to ensure whether the benefits of any scheme are going to the right farmer or not.

Could the burden of urea subsidy increase?

Sources said that the government is running this step as a pilot project. At present the government gives a lot of subsidy on fertilizer subsidy, this step can be taken to rationalize it. The government's budget expenditure on fertilizer subsidy is estimated at ₹1.68 trillion, which may cross ₹1.91 trillion.

The main reason for the expenditure exceeding budget estimates is the record consumption of urea in FY26, which has already reached 31.15 million tonnes (mt) between April to December 2025, about 4 per cent higher than the corresponding period in 2024.

The Union agriculture ministry, in a meeting with state government representatives last month, had mooted the idea of gradually integrating urea sales with the agri stack, starting with a pilot project in some select districts, officials said.

In the first phase, pilot projects will be run in seven districts, where a large number of farmer IDs have already been created. During this phase, the farmer ID will be used to ensure that the fertilizer is sold only to the land owner, cultivator or the person authorized by them.

How is Farmer ID made? How to create a farmer ID?

To create a farmer ID, simply register online through your state's portal (like PM-KISAN or Agri Stack), provide Aadhaar for eKYC, enter farm details including land survey number, give consent for data use, e-sign, and submit to get enrollment ID to track approval. After verification, ID will be generated to avail government schemes.

You can also get Farmer ID made by visiting CSC. If you want to make it yourself then you can register through your state portal or Farmer Registry App.

IDs of so many farmers have been made?

According to official data, by December 4, 2025, about 7.67 crore farmer IDs or digital identity of farmers have been created in the country. These IDs record the demographic profile, land information and farming methods of farmers under the Digital Agriculture Mission.

What is Agri Stack Platform?

The government is working on a plan to gradually integrate the sale of urea through the Agri Stack platform. A question must have come in the minds of many people that what is this Agri Stack platform?

Agri Stack is a digital foundation being created by the government to bring together diverse stakeholders to improve farming in India and deliver better results and outcomes for farmers using data and digital services.
