IANS, New Delhi. Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay have made a very important breakthrough towards the treatment of cancer. He has developed a very simple and effective method to safely recover laboratory-grown 'immune cells'. This new technology can prove to be very helpful especially for T-cell based cancer treatment.
What is T-cell therapy?
Immunotherapy, such as 'CAR T-cell' (CAR-T), is used to fight cancer. In this process, first of all T-cells (which are a special type of immune cells) are extracted from the patient's blood. After this, these cells are modified in the laboratory and their numbers are increased. Finally, these powerful cells are put back into the patient's bloodstream so that they can fight and eliminate cancer cells.
The biggest challenge is to keep the sales alive
Since these T-cells are grown outside the body, they have to be collected very carefully. It is very important to ensure that when they are returned to the patient's body, they are alive and able to perform their functions fully. The success of this therapy depends on how we get these cells back safely after growing them.
What new did the researchers do?
Professor Prakriti Tayalia and her team accepted this challenge. He adopted a special technique to exactly mimic the natural environment inside the body. The team created a special structure using a process called 'electrospinning', which helps these cells recover better.
Professor Tayalia said about this that "Cell recovery sounds very easy, but in reality it is one of the biggest challenges of this process." He told that if we do not have healthy cells in sufficient quantity, we will neither be able to test them properly nor will we be able to use them to treat the patient. This new discovery of IIT Bombay will play an important role in making cancer treatment more successful.
