Jaiprakash Ranjan, New Delhi. India and the European Union have given unprecedented strength to their relationship by finalizing a historic Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which both sides have termed as the 'Mother of All Deals'.

At the India-EU summit that concluded on Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and top EU leadership Ursula von der Leyen and Antonio Costa not only announced the conclusion of negotiations on an FTA, but also signed a Defense and Security Partnership Agreement for the first time, establishing trade and defense as the new pillars of cooperation.

With this, a total of 13 agreements were agreed upon, including agreements related to the movement of Indian talents to Europe, and a joint comprehensive strategic agenda for the year 2030 was approved under the shared vision of a rules-based global order. In the era of rapid disintegration in the global system established after the Second World War, this India-EU partnership is being considered to create stability and confidence in the world.

Using the platform of this summit, PM Modi and the European Union have not only taken steps towards protecting their long-term interests but have also given a message at the global level. Addressing the conference, PM Narendra Modi said that 'Today India has concluded the largest free trade agreement in its history. This historic agreement will facilitate access for our farmers and our small industries to the European market, create new opportunities in manufacturing and strengthen supply chains globally. This is not just a trade agreement. This is the new blueprint for shared prosperity.

A historic turning point in India-EU relations

He said, 'Today there is great turmoil in the global system. In such a situation, the partnership between India and the European Union will strengthen stability in the international system. EU President Ursula von der Leyen termed the summit a historic turning point in India-EU relations and said, 'We are not just strengthening our economies, but also ensuring the security of our citizens at a time when the world is becoming more insecure than ever.'

Describing the first-ever security and defense partnership between India and the European Union as 'a historic and trust-based platform', the EU President said that the partnership in the defense industry of Europe and India will be further deepened. Cooperation will be further strengthened, especially in the field of maritime security.

Condemnation of terrorist incidents

European Council President Antonio Costa said, 'Trade is an important geopolitical stabilizer. It is also a fundamental source of economic development. Trade agreements strengthen the rules-based economic system and promote shared prosperity. As the world's largest democracies and strong supporters of multilateralism, the EU and India share a common responsibility to uphold international law.'

Regarding security and defense partnership, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said, 'This is the first such comprehensive defense and security framework between the two sides which will deepen relations in areas such as maritime security, defense industry and technology, cyber and hybrid threats, space, counter-terrorism operations etc.'

In today's meeting, the top leaders strongly condemned the two recent terrorist incidents in India (Pahalgam and Red Fort attacks). Also condemning all types of terrorist incidents, including all types of cross-border terrorism, it has said that there is a need to take more strict and decisive steps against it at the international level. Cooperation between India and EU will also be increased against those who incite terrorist activities or provide them funding and training. Apart from this, an agreement will also be made on the exchange of confidential information related to security.

Legal gateway office will be established

An important agreement between the two sides is regarding mobility. Currently, a comprehensive cooperation framework on mobility has been finalized between India and EU, which is in accordance with the laws on both sides. Under this, first of all the European Legal Gateway Office will be established in India, then a corporate arrangement will be made to take trained and untrained workers from India as per the employment opportunities in Europe and the labor required for it.

A total of 13 announcements were made between India and EU on Tuesday. It also includes an overall agenda for strategic relations up to the year 2030. It has a roadmap for important areas like energy security, mobility. This roadmap contains details of how it will move forward in areas ranging from IT and semiconductors to rare metals, nuclear energy, increasing cooperation between private companies in the defense sector. It is clear that the foundation of the relationship laid today will grow further by the year 2030. It has also been agreed to hold annual level talks between the two sides.
