Jagran correspondent, Muzaffarpur. Throwing bio-medical waste here and there is not only a serious threat to the environment, but it also adversely affects human health. A review meeting on this subject was organized under the chairmanship of District Magistrate Subrata Kumar Sen, in which scientific management and safe disposal of waste was discussed in detail.

In the meeting, the Civil Surgeon was instructed to inspect all the government and private health institutions of the district and prepare a list and submit the report within 48 hours. The concerned health centers themselves should ensure disposal of bio-medical waste as per rules, otherwise strict action will be taken against the violators.

The District Magistrate said that a large amount of bio-medical waste is generated every day from hospitals, clinics, pathology labs, veterinary centers and vaccination centers. It is necessary to manage it scientifically, otherwise it can become a major cause of infection and pollution.

Infected needles, blades, dressing material, objects stained with blood and bodily fluids become the medium for the spread of many serious diseases. Needle prick incidents pose a serious threat, especially to healthcare workers and sanitation workers.

Open burning of medical waste increases air pollution and toxic gases spread into the atmosphere. Chemical wastes pollute soil and groundwater, causing long-term environmental damage.

Plastic based medical waste persists in the environment for a long time and affects the ecosystem. The meeting was attended by other concerned stakeholders including representatives of Municipal Corporation, Health Department, Education Department, Pollution Control Board and private and government hospitals.
