CBI has made 9 policemen accused.
Manoj Bisht, Chandigarh. The policemen accused in the alleged kidnapping and torture case of dentist Mohit Dhawan are posted on important posts. Due to this, questions are being raised on the functioning of the police department and the kindness of top officials.
Despite the charge sheet being filed by the CBI, the accused policemen have been posted in important units with sensitive and public dealings; questions are being raised whether they can take full advantage of their posting.
Some policemen are posted at the same place where they were accused of kidnapping. The Central Investigation Agency (CBI) has made 9 policemen accused in this case. Initially 10 names were included, but the name of constable Neeraj Kumar has been removed from the charge sheet.
According to sources, Neeraj Kumar can be made a government witness. Last year, CBI had registered an FIR against seven policemen in this case. After the investigation that lasted for about a year, the CBI filed a charge sheet in the district court and also added the names of two other policemen.

When Dr. Dhawan's alleged kidnapping took place when all the accused were posted in the crime branch. Presently Inspector Harinder Singh is posted in Sekhon Security Wing. SI Suresh Kumar is Additional SHO at Sector-34 police station. ASI Ajmer Singh is posted in Cyber Cell. Head constable Anil Kumar and constable Vikas Hooda are posted in the operation cell.
ASI Balwant is posted in the crime branch only. Constable Pradeep is posted at Sector-39 police station. Head constable Rinku Ram is posted at IT Park police station. Despite serious allegations, none of the accused has faced any action like non-field duty, raising questions on the role of the department.
Serious allegations and status of investigation
Dr. Mohit Dhawan had filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court for anticipatory bail in a criminal case. The High Court had directed him to appear in the district court. On January 7, 2022, when Dr. When Dhawan reached the court, it is alleged that the Crime Branch team detained him illegally at the entry gate itself.
The next day he was produced in the court and remand for seven days. Dr. Dhawan remained in jail for almost two months. After being released on bail, he filed a petition in the High Court against the concerned policemen.
The High Court had given instructions to form a special team for investigation. Chandigarh administration challenged this order in the Supreme Court. In August 2024, the Supreme Court handed over the investigation to the CBI instead of the Punjab Police.
