PTI, Kathmandu. Nepal's Election Commission on Friday allowed political parties to campaign for 15 days for the general elections starting from February 16 to March 5.

According to Election Commission deputy spokesperson Suman Ghimire, political parties are allowed to campaign from February 16 to March 2. According to the election code of conduct, no campaign activities of any kind such as rallies, processions or meetings are allowed before February 16.

During the official campaign period, political parties may organize public events and publish or broadcast election-related materials through the media.

"Political parties are allowed to organize public rallies, public meetings and other election campaign-related programs only between February 16 and March 2," he said.

However, he added that candidates can also conduct door-to-door campaigns before February 16. A 48-hour silence period will be imposed from midnight on March 2, during which all campaign activities will have to stop.

A total of 18.9 million people are eligible to vote in the upcoming House of Representatives elections, which will directly elect 165 members. Out of a total of 275 members, 110 are elected to the lower house through a proportional voting system.

General elections were necessitated after former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli resigned on September 9 following violent protests against his government by the youth-led Jatenji group over corruption and a ban on internet media.
