Koneshwar Mahadev Temple, Lucknow
State Bureau, Jagran, Lucknow: The ancient Koneshwar Mahadev temple of Lucknow, associated with the Ramayana period, will now be developed in a new form. The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department is carrying out work for the tourism development of this temple, which is associated with centuries-old religious faith and historical beliefs.
Located in the Chowk area of Lucknow, this temple is included in the priorities of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. An amount of Rs 1 crore will be spent on the beautification and development of this mythological heritage. The ancient Koneshwar Mahadev Temple is now moving towards a new peak of its glory.
Keeping in mind the unique identity of the Shivalinga seated in the corner of the temple and the centuries-old beliefs, the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department is accelerating the tourism development of the mythological heritage. A large number of Shiva devotees come here not only from the state but also from far-flung areas. During the month of Sawan, a huge crowd of devotees throngs the temple.
Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said that Koneshwar Mahadev Temple belongs to the Ramayana period and it holds special significance due to the beliefs related to Lakshman, the younger brother of Lord Ram.
Situated on the banks of river Gomti, this place is considered to be the ashram of sage Kaundinya in ancient times, whose mention is found in religious texts. It is believed that the mournful Lakshman stayed here while returning after leaving Mother Sita in the forest. On the advice of sage Kaundinya, he consecrated the Shivalinga established here. This incident is also mentioned in Ramayana written by Maharishi Valmiki.
Shivalinga is situated in the corner of the temple. For this reason, it was first called Kaundinyeshwar Mahadev, which later became famous as Koneshwar Mahadev. Crowds of devotees gather here in the month of Sawan.
The Tourism Minister said that keeping in mind the convenience of the devotees and tourists, modern lighting, clean toilets, drinking water facilities and resting places will be constructed in the temple premises. These facilities are expected to promote religious tourism.
According to the Tourism Department, Lucknow has recently been given the status of 'Creative City of Gastronomy' by UNESCO. Along with this, due to the tourism facilities developed by the government and better connectivity, the arrival of about 1.5 crore tourists was recorded in Lucknow in the year 2025, which included a large number of foreign tourists. This strongly underlines the city's growing international popularity and cultural attraction.
Koneshwar Mahadev Temple is easy to reach. The temple can be easily reached by auto, cab or city bus from Charbagh Railway Station, the main transport hub of the city. Shiva devotees coming from all over the country and state get the opportunity of darshan without any difficulty.
