Dialogue thread, Kodha (Katihar). On the occasion of Mahashivratri (Mahashivratri 2026), a unique and attractive tradition is performed every year in the Shiva temple located in the Kodha police station premises, which along with faith has become the cultural identity of the area. Under this tradition, the police station head plays the role of Lord Shiva, while his wife performs a symbolic marriage in the form of Mother Parvati.
The rural bride party of the Nagar Panchayat and people from nearby Panchayats including Maheshpur participate in the event as a wedding procession. This almost three decade old tradition was started by the then police station incharge Surendra Kumar Saroj on the request of the villagers. Since then all the rituals of Samadhi Milan, Jaymala and marriage as per Vedic rituals are performed with reverence and grandeur.
Since the year 2001, continuously on Mahashivratri, in the presence of thousands of devotees, the Thanedar's procession leaves the police station premises and goes to Masan Baba place. Where after the puja, it returns to the Shiva temple via the main market. After this, Samadhi Milan, Varmala and marriage rituals which last all night are completed.
Taking this tradition forward, from 2004 to 2025, different police station chiefs dressed up as Mahadev and performed the Shiva-Parvati marriage ritual with their wives. Now in the year 2026, the current police station incharge Sujit Kumar will follow this religious tradition. Whose preparations are going on in full swing.
The festival is broadcast live through drone cameras and a banquet is also organised. In which thousands of people participate. This Mahashivratri festival, organized with the cooperation of local public representatives and villagers, has become a symbol of faith, tradition and social unity in the area.
