MP Ajay Mandal raised the issue of dredging in Ganga in Parliament

Jagran correspondent, Bhagalpur. MP Ajay Kumar Mandal has expressed serious concern in the Lok Sabha regarding the dredging work in the Ganga river. He asked the Central Government to clarify in the Lok Sabha that the dredging work being done in the Ganga should not have any adverse impact on the safety and environmental balance of the coastal areas. In response to the question raised by the MP, the Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways informed the House about the situation.

The MP said the issue of dredging in the Ganga is not limited to just navigation through the waterway, but is directly linked to the safety of many coastal villages, agricultural lands and densely populated areas of Bhagalpur district, including Nathnagar block. He cautioned that if the dredging work is done in an unbalanced manner towards the southern bank of river Ganga, it could pose a serious risk of floods, river erosion and land degradation.

The reply given by the Minister stated that river Ganga comes under National Waterway-1 and the purpose of dredging is to maintain minimum navigable depth for smooth movement of cargo vessels. This work is being done by the Inland Waterways Authority of India on need basis.

The MP said he is supportive of the development of inland water transport, but this development should not come at the cost of local public safety, environmental balance and flood control.

He demanded that scientific study should be conducted before the dredging work, its direction and intensity should be monitored and the local administration should be included in the decision process. The MP made it clear that he will keep a constant eye on this issue and will not allow any compromise with the interests of the people of Bhagalpur.
